A statistical analysis of 324 children with traumatic injury charts was carried out to
document and describe the dental trauma of patients visited pediatric dentistry in
infirmary of dental college of Yonsei university, aged 0 to 14 years. The traumatic
injury chart was analyzed for the distribution of age, sea time of trauma, time elapsed,
cause, occlusion, traumatized toot/teeth, number of traumatized tooth/teeth, type of
trauma, and emergency treatment. Of the 3546 patients treated initially in pediatric
dentistry for one and a half years from Jan. 4, 1988 to Jun. 30, 1989, traumatically
injured children were 324 patients.
Results of this study were as follows :
1. The rate of traumatically injured patients was 9.1%.
2. Trauma to primary teeth reached a peak in prevalence between 2 and 3 years, and
those to permanent teeth at the age of 9 years
3. Boys suffered injuries more often than girls, the male to female ratio of the study
patients being 1.5 : 1. The sex difference reached a peak at the age of 4 years.
4. The prevalent traumatized time was afternoon regardless of ages.
5. Sixty two percents of traumatized patients visited dental clinic within a day.
6. Fall down and collision to some material accounted for 68.1% of the causes of
trauma.
7. The most prevalent traumatized teeth were maxillary central incisors in both
dentition.
8. Average number of traumatized teeth were two.
9. Among the types of trauma, displacements were relatively frequent in deciduous
teeth, and Eactures in permanent teeth.
10. Of the emergency treatments, observation without actual treatment comprised 55%
in deciduous teeth, 43.7% in permanent teeth. In decending order of frequency, splint,
extration, pulpectomy comprised the treatments in deciduous teeth, and splint,
pulpectomy, replantation in permanent teeth.
